Small Home

We live in a fairly small home. I wouldn't call it a tiny home, but others might. You see, for a family of 5, almost 6, we live in just over 1000 square feet. We have 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a laundry room, a kitchen, an eating space, and a living room. According to Google, the average home is now currently over 2,000 square feet, and families with around 6 people might even live in homes up to 3,200 square feet.
That would be more than double the size of my home, if you weren't tracking that.
But I don't want that. I like my small home.
Does it sometimes feel too cluttered? Absolutely. Is it sometimes frustrating trying to figure out where to put things? Sure. Do I constantly purge and look around for things that I can get rid of? Your darn tootin', I do.
But I really wouldn't trade it.
I love that we all pile up together on one couch to watch a movie. I love that our heirloom dining table is slightly too large for our dining space, and that we have to creatively squeeze around it. I love that there are only so many places to "run off" to. Our family is together more than not, and that is why it's worth the small home.
I sometimes even joke that I wouldn't mind a smaller home since all the kids are usually right on top of me anyway. It would be less to clean after all.
But so many people just can't imagine it. So many people ask where we put all our kids, or when we're going to move now that we're expecting number 4. I've even had people ask us how we were going to expand or add on to our house--not if, but how.
I just giggle and answer politely that their are bigger families that live in smaller spaces and always have been, and hope that they let it go.
Our home is small, but it is cozy. It provides shelter from the storm, gives us a place to rest our heads, and is the location where many meals are made and shared with laughter and excitement.
It may be small, but the memories we are making here are larger than life.
It's not for everyone, but for us, a small home is perfect.
